Pat McGrath Lab’s Metalmorphosis Kit In Silver, $60

Pat McGrath’s Metalmorphosis Kit!  Oh my gosh I was so excited to get this!  Even tried talking myself out of it but I finally caved.  The thing that was holding me back was the price.  For $60, it had better be a decent sized makeup palette or something.  I actually couldn’t resist when I got a coupon in the mail from Sephora.  Now the kit would be mine!

Also who is Pat McGrath?  An world famous British makeup artist, originally began her work as an artist, for photo shoots at I-D magazine.  The fashion industry began paying attention & started commissioning her to do makeup at photo shoots, as well as fashion shows.  Nowadays she’s a highly sought after makeup artist for fashion weeks around the world, and she’s the creative design director of Max Factor & CoverGirl cosmetics!  In 2013, Queen Elizabeth named her a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion & beauty industries.  Needless to say, she’s a master at what she does!

Pat McGrath’s MetalMorphosis Everything Kit, $165

Recently Pat McGrath decided to release some limited edition items sold exclusively through Sephora.  I remember a month before they sold a kit where you could wear glitter all over your lips.  Needless to say, it is now sold out.  After seeing a video of her Metalmorphosis kits online, I felt like I had to get my hands on it.  They offer it in 4 different colors, or you could buy 1 mega kit with all the colors, for $165.  Sorry, but for me the Everything Kit, would be too much.

Each kit comes with a cream & powder eye shadows, Mehron mixing liquid, & an double ended black Pat McGrath eyeliner.  Now I see online that I can also buy the eyeliner separately, if I wanted to.  Honestly I would’ve preferred if they had taken out the eyeliner of the kit, & that would’ve shaved $24 off the price tag.

And now, finally testing out the products.  I swatched the eyeshadows on my wrists, with the cream eyeshadow in the photo on the left, & the powder eyeshadow on the right.  The cream eyeshadow is a lot more pigmented than the powder; the powder I actually had to swipe a couple times with a brush to get the color that you see in the pic.

And the swatches!  Ok, I’ve swatched at the top, the cream with the powder eye shadows by themselves.  The 2nd swatch, I took a bit of the cream eye shadow, mixed it with the Mehron mixing liquid (that it comes with), & then dusted the powder eye shadow on top.

And finally the dupe!  The 3rd one, is Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow in 60 Silver Strike, with Ulta’s Glitter Eye Top Coat in Put A Ring On it on top.  Ah, if only I had known.  I would’ve been able to save myself a chunk of money!

Apparently when you play with the cream eye shadow & the Mehron mixing liquid, it becomes a beautiful metallic solution that looks like foil on the skin!  I’m sorry I haven’t swatched that here, for you do need a makeup spatula (which I don’t have), in order to scrape off the eye shadow & mix properly with the mixing liquid.  I will say from the photos they look phenomenal!  But I’m sure if you take Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow with the mixing liquid, you could get quite the similar effect.

I am quite tempted to get the kit in bronze, but I’m sure there’s a dupe out there on the market.  Now I just have to avoid looking at the kits until it’s sold out.  Pat McGrath, I have no doubt that you’re a genius, but this baby is way overpriced.  (At least chuck out the eyeliner & whittle down the price!)  Unfortunately they don’t make Maybelline’s Eye Studio Color Tattoo Cream Gel Shadow in bronze.  Anyone come across a dupe for that?

  1. I love these metallics! I always feel I’m a little too old to wear them however. Maybe you could post some looks and application techniques so I don’t look too disco.
