And that is a good question: what colors go best with you? You could say that you could wear any color; & you wouldn’t be wrong. But what about what makeup colors look best with your skin tone? That’s a tricky one that only the savviest of makeup artists can answer. Here with the mystery debunked just scroll to read which colors are the most flattering to you!
The Breakdown:
All skintones fall into one of 3 categories: Warm, cool, or neutral. And there are colors that flatter & complement your skin tone, whether it’s clothing / makeup. But which one are you?
You Have Cool Tones If:
Hair color is: It can range from light blonde to very dark (black or very dark brown)
Your skin tone is: Has bluish undertone. It can range also from very fair to very dark.
Cool colors that look best: Bright blue, royal blue, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, deep purples, lavender, lilac snow.
Warm colors that look best: Shocking pick (versus hot pink, which is warm), ruby, bright rose.
Neutrals: Gray, navy, white
Colors that would be tough: Orange & yellow
Celebrity examples: Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah
You Have Warm Tones If:
Hair color is: Dark brown to dark blonde hair
Your skin tone is: Has a greenish or a golden undertone. Olive complexions are also considered warm.
Cool colors that look best: Warm greens and blues, like olive, deeper turquoise, red-purples (magenta and orchid shades)
Warm colors that look best: Oranges, reds, golden yellow, amber, honey gold
Neutrals: Taupe, hot chocolate, creamy whites, winter wheat, latte
Colors that would be tough: Icy shades, jeweled tones
Celebrity examples: Jennifer Aniston & J. Lo
You Have Neutral Tones If:
Hair color is: Is a combination of colors—blonde with ashy streaks or brown with warmer tones.
Your skin tone is: Hard to determine-you can’t tell if you’re warm or cool.
Colors that look best: Neutral colors that fall in the middle of the color spectrum. Look for light peach, dusty pinks, soft rose, peony pink (blush-toned pinks look best for neutrals), placid blue, jade green, camo green.
Neutrals: Taupes, grays, off-whites (like vanilla)
Colors that would be tough: Icy shades, jeweled tones
Celebrity examples: Angelina Jolie, Rosie Huntington Whiteley

Thanks So Much for this Post b/c I Have “Very” Fair Skin and I Actually Only Have a Handful of Colors that I Can Wear! I Have a Very Hard Time Even Finding a Foundation Light Enough for My Skin and I Love When I Can Actually Find Something Looks Good on Me as Far as Makeup & Clothing are Concerned! My Coloring is Probably Closest to Anne Hathaway b/c She is Pretty Fair Skinned Too and My Go to Color is Actually Red b/c I Have Dark Hair Too! Thanks for this very informative post. I sort of recall getting a consultation by a makeup artist in the 80’s and was told I was in the cool range. I had almost translucent skin that seemed to have yellow undertones, but my veins could be seen at times (sounds creepy) because of the translucency so I suppose I appeared more blue. I looked best in violet or lavender, a certain bluish purple or pink, but also could wear forest green, black and red. Now, so many years later my hair is gray and my skin doesn’t appear translucent anymore. Do you think a person changes undertones due to aging (I am 62). Thanks again for your post.

Even after reading this I haven’t the slightest clue which I am 🤣🤣🤣 I’m blonde blue eyed and fair skin…Lol! I usually like a very light pink eye shadow and a little darker shimmery pink over it that’s what looks best on me .. I don’t look good with blue eye shadow but people ALWAYS compliment me when I wear bright blue colored clothes they always say the color looks amazing on me ..who knows! Lol!

I really appreciate the detail you went into. Most just say “Are your veins blue or green?”. Well for me it depends on the day and the light I’m in! This was never enough info for me to figure out my tone. After reading this I’m 97% sure that I’m cool not warm. It also explains why most of my clothes fall in the shade range that they do( blues & greens mostly)!! Thanks for taking the time to go into depth for all of us who couldnt figure it out!
