REALLY saving money on your beauty supplies…

Where?  At the dollar store!  And all its variations, (dollar tree, family dollar, etc) Their products vary slightly, but for the most part, they sell the same things.  For example, my favorite store in the world is Sephora, (still is) but there are some basic things like makeup sponges, nail polish remover, that are overpriced & overrated.  My husband told me that his employers are multi-millionaires and still shop at the dollar store.  Even drugstores have high markups.  Here check out this article on things you should save / splurge on: 3 things you should never splurge on.

Read this post for I’ve included all kinds of beauty tips, from how to repair broken eyeshadow, to using baby powder to magnify your lashes.  Here I will list all the things that I do get from the dollar store, that saves me money:

Makeup sponges: Your basic makeup sponges essentially are all the same.  Target and Walmart will try to sell you a pack for about $3 or $4, whereas the dollar store sells it to you for only $1.  At Sephora, they have this thing called the ‘makeup wheel’ which consists of 6 sponges for $7.  And what for??  For something you will use once and throw away?  Save your money somewhere else.

Nail polish remover:  They also sell this at Target or Walmart for $1.  A small bottle of it at Sephora costs $9!!

Eyebrow razors: I love these because I can lightly ‘cut off’ stray eyebrow hairs without enduring the pain of waxing or plucking.  Nor do I have to spend a fortune!  Lots of places sell a packet of 3 for $1!!  They do have their own version at Sephora, called the ‘Eyebrow Touch up Razor set’ which costs $15.  Forget it & save yourself $14.

Tissues!!  You can get boxes of tissues at the dollar store.  At Walmart they sell a box of kleenex for $1.  Or get the packets to stick in your purse.  At my dollar tree they sell an 8 pack for $1.  Your mascara’s running?  Grab a tissue. facial-tissues-741XZphZOAzL

Cotton balls, pads, & q tips:Cotton balls / pads you can use to remove makeup / nail polish.  Q tips you can use to correct your nail polish/lipstick.  Or simply use them to clean your ears.  Check out this article on Cosmopolitan on the many uses of q tips!

Loofahs: They sell both the real and artificial loofahs at my dollar store!  The real loofah would be for the more exfoliating wash, for those who want a gentle lather get the plastic one.  Just make sure you rinse them out dry after using, because they can mold.  Actually my dollar tree will sell the plastic ones in a pack of four, for $1.  There are places that sell them for $5 for a single one.  Save yourself some money.

Nail file and nail clipper: Don’t let people overcharge you on these things.  They have the metal nail file as well.  I’ve seen the paper nail file for as cheap as 50 cents each!!  And everyone needs nail clippers; you can get the kind that has a keyring on it to hang with your keys.  There have been too many times when I broke or chipped a nail at work.

Nail polish: I usually spend a few dollars on nail polish, but sometimes I do get them there.  Especially for basic things like clear nail polish/lip gloss, I’ll get that at the dollar store.  Check out this store Shop Miss A!  They have lots of nail polish for only $1!
French manicure stickersThis would’ve been a lifesaver for me the night before my wedding photo shoot.  If you get it on Amazon, it’s EVEN cheaper.  $1.50 for a pack of 10, and the shipping is free.  Get yourself a base color nail polish (pink/beige), and white nail polish.  Put on the base coat, let it dry, put on the stickers, and then finally finish the edge of your nails with the white.  Let it all dry & then put on a clear top coat.  VOILA!  Your own DIY french manicure.
Hairbrushes and comb: I always get my hairbrushes at the dollar store!  I don’t know why women spend a fortune on them!

Hair tie and bobby pins: My dollar store sells headbands as well!  I usually have my hair up in a ponytail, & if I need hair ties that’s where I always go to get them.  There are some stores they charge you $5 for a set of bobby pins.  Don’t waste your time.

Disposable razor blade: The dollar tree by me carries these for both men & women.  I personally don’t use disposable ones anymore, but I will say that they are convenient when you travel.  I used to use disposable razor blades all the time, & I would use 1 as long as I possible could, & then throw it away.  (I think that you can say that about any razor, really) If you do do that, it does save you a lot of money.

Foot file and pumice stone: Every girl needs a good foot file in the shower.  They help remove the calluses and dead skin off your feet.  Feet with thick callouses, and cracked heels, are not sexy. It’s important to have at least one, but VERY important in the summertime.  (When you’re going to the pool/beach and you’re wearing sandals) I have a 4 in 1 foot file I got from Target for about $3.  You can get foot files there too.

Baby oil, baby wipes, powder and makeup wipes: This is not only for women with children.  I have the book “That Extra Inch” by Victoria Beckham and she claims that baby oil is her favorite moisturizer, and that baby wipes are her favorite makeup remover.  I tried the baby wipes for makeup; it doesn’t do the job for waterproof makeup.  However, you can pick up the makeup wipes.  And why not?  A small pack is great for travel.  If you don’t have waterproof makeup remover, baby oil is a great fix, but for me it’s too greasy.  There are some women that like to have baby powder to keep themselves dry.  Another great tip: a coworker of mine told me that you can use baby powder with mascara to magnify your lashes.  How to do it?  Check out this article here from Elle magazine on how to magnify your lashes!  (Click through the pictures and they will show you how it’s done)

Hand sanitizer and soap: Some stores charge $3-5 for this, when this is also in the travel section of Target for $1.  Soap is also $1.  Buy a big bottle (bulk size) when you run out & refill it.

Hydrogen peroxide & Rubbing alcohol: It doesn’t sound beauty related, but it is!  I always use them to sterilize my earrings.  It’s also handy when it comes to sterilizing your palettes, & give your brushes a quick cleanse.  Also I came across some articles online on how you can use rubbing alcohol to fix broken eyeshadow.  And they’re good for cuts and bruises too.  =)  Articles on fixing broken eyeshadow: fixing one broken eye shadow, & fixing an eyeshadow palette.
Candles: For the more sentimental girls. you can also get candles at the dollar store, however they are usually the tea light variety.  If you want to make a romantic night with your man, hit up the dollar store.  Ikea, Target, & Walmart also sell lots of different candles at reasonable prices.
Spray bottles: For your plants?  No!  For your clothes!  My husband prefers to have one when he’s ironing, for he finds that the spray from the iron is not enough.  Not to mention that this is great also for cleaning, i.e. glass, countertops, etc.  Also there are women who like a spritz of water in their hair before they go out.  The smaller spray bottles, usually used for travel, can be used for things like toner, or body mist.
Pillboxes & pill cutters: They sell this at my Rite Aid for $5, when the dollar store, Bed bath & beyond, the Container store all sell it for $1.  Don’t. waste. your. money.
Sewing supplies: Sewing needles, measuring tape, pins, thread, lint rollers, and safety pins.  Some carry buttons too!  This great even for the girls who don’t know how to sew.  Needle & thread are always great if one of your buttons comes off; safety pins are great for those emergency situations like if the zipper of your dress breaks.  Lint rollers can get the hair/lint off your garments.  I think a girl should always have a roll of measuring tape; to measure yourself/clothes.  If you shop online, or need to be refitted for a bra, you need to know your measurements.
Garment bags: I can’t say for all dollar stores, but mine actually sells garment bags for suits & dresses.  I don’t know about you, but I hate the garment bags from the dry cleaners.  I usually use them for my evening dresses, for I would like to protect them from dust, moths, etc.  They’re the most expensive garments I have, so I would like to keep them safe.

Travel bottles/bagThis is great for when you travel.  They sell all kinds of travel bottles & the plastic bag for a dollar.  If you go to the travel section of Target, it’s also $1 each.

Toothbrushes, floss, floss picks, toothbrushes, and toothpaste: They actually have Crest and Colgate at my dollar store!  I also know a store that sells a massive 10 pack of toothbrushes for a dollar.  I would save that for when guests stay over.  Again, my Rite Aid charges $5 for floss.  It’s. the. exact. same. thing.  Doesn’t all floss do the same thing?
Chapstick and Vaseline: Don’t overspend on a basic staple like chapstick.  There’s a stick of blistex at a dollar tree by me and they’re $1 each.  If you want, you can spend a little more & get the kind that has SPF in it.  And finally, vaseline.  This is great for chapped, dry lips.  Some women with really dry skin like to use it as a moisturizer, but for me it’s also too greasy.  When it would get really dry in the winter, to keep her nose moisturized, my mom would actually rub vaseline inside her nostrils.  This may sound silly, but there are people who are prone to nosebleeds, and this can be a quick fix in the winter.
Other things that are not beauty related that I get at the dollar store:
Gift items: gift bags, tissue paper, greeting cards, and ribbons.  All for $1 each
Party items: plastic utensils, paper plates, cups, aluminum trays.  These are great for a party or BBQ.  I prefer to use real dishes, but sometimes you need them.
Office supplies: Notebooks, binders, post its, mailing supplies.
I don’t buy EVERYTHING at the dollar store, but like I said, there are some things that are just over priced.  My husband told me that quite often the factories that sell to the dollar store, are the SAME factories that would sell to i.e. Walmart.  Save your money on the more important things in life.
