Exfoliating!! The DIY way..

Exfoliating for me was only a recent discovery (unfortunately).  I went to spa once to get an exfoliation treatment, where a woman scrubbed me down with an exfoliation pad. My mother remarked that my skin looked cleaner & more luminous afterwards.
Exfoliating gloves at the Body Shop, $5, or $3.79 by Bathery at Target
And did you know.. you can do this in the comfort of your own home?? Forget spending hundreds on the treatments on the spa! Buy a pair of exfoliating gloves from The Body Shop. Usually they’re a pair for $5, if you don’t have a body shop near you, they sell something similar with a brand called Bathery at Target for only $3.79. Give yourself a good scrub with your favorite shower gel while you’re in the shower. I personally like to use these gloves when washing my face. Just make sure to wet your face first, put on a glove(s), wet the glove, squeeze your facial cleanser into your hand, make sure to massage your whole face, & then rinse off.

Hemp body mitt, The Body Shop, $10
For the more intense exfoliation: The Hemp body mitt sold at the Body shop, is one of my favorites!  I also believe that a real sea sponge makes a good exfoliator, which you can get at the dollar store or Target.  Just keep in mind when using any loofah make sure you squeeze them dry after using, because they can mold.

Binchotan Charcoal Body Scrub Towel, $18This dual textured towel, infused with Binchotan charcoal, is meant to remove toxins & oils from the skin.  Charcoal is becoming a more popular ingredient in skincare products nowadays for drawing out impurities.  No need for a scrub down at the spa!  Give yourself a nice rub down at home in the shower!

Tip: If you do exfoliate in the shower, & have dry skin, get a really moisturizing soap for a 2 in 1 process.  For the drier parts of my body, I’ll use i.e. Shea Moisture’s Argan Oil & Raw Shea Body Wash, squeeze some on the glove, & then exfoliate.  It’s wonderful because I’m exfoliating & moisturizing at the same time!  I always love 2 in 1 processes, for if they can cut out an unnecessary step, why not?
dermasuri

I also see this new fangled thing on amazon called the Dermasuri deep exfoliating mitt, which only costs $20, and is getting rave reviews. I have yet to try it, but if any of you do, you let me know!

For a moisturizing exfoliant, the Mango Body Scrub comes with added oil, for dry skin.

Tree Hut’s Detoxifying Mediterranean Salt Scrub, $9

For a detoxifying scrub: This Mediterranean salt scrub is combined with salt from the Dead Sea, & is meant to treat dry skin problems like eczema & psoriasis, while the charcoal draws out the toxins.

Tip: If you get a jar of body scrub, this eliminates the need for the gloves altogether.  (for me, personally I like to use the gentle gloves on my face, so I would still need them) Read the jars carefully for there are some body scrubs they add oil to them.  (so you can be exfoliated & moisturized at the same time) These are great options for people with dry skin!  There are lots of places that sell body scrubs, (my favorites) The Body Shop, Sephora; The Boots line at Target has some body scrubs as well as Bodcology.  Unfortunately usually they come in large jars, but The Body Shop has some travel sizes that you can buy & try.

Like I said earlier, I just use the exfoliating gloves on my face.  But I have come across new fangled items like charcoal sponges for the face, which are said to rid impurities from the skin.  Here are a pair of Konjac sponges, a pair for $12 on Amazon.com

Konjac Sponges, Charcoal, Green tea & Natural Exfoliating Beauty Sponges, $13

Konjac sponges are actually all the range in Japan.  And with the 3 colors, you get 3 different kinds to try!  The black one (charcoal) is meant for acne / blackheads, the green one (green tea) is meant for mature / damaged skin, and the white one is for gentle skin (i.e. babies)  Cut into these adorable heart shapes, before using you’re supposed to soak it in warm water, & wait for the sponge to expand.  Then you can use them on your face to exfoliate, then rinse, & then simply press them between your hands to expel the water & hang them to dry.  I read an article that you can use them for about a month, here they claim you can use it up to 3 months.  Because they’re made from natural plant fibers, they’re biodegradable!  You can just toss these into your garden when you’re done with them!

Microdermabrasion brushes

Finally I have come across this new technology of microdermabrasion. I’m sure you’ve seen ads of girls with some sort of facial brush massaging their face. That’s exactly what I’m referring to. In the past I brushed it off as a silly expense for high maintenance girls. But no more! They sell affordable ones now, like i.e. Neutrogena sonic wave power for about $12!! That’s a good deal considering sonic brushes can cost in the hundreds. That’s another thing I have yet to try but will in the near future.  Here are some suggestions if you’d like to try an affordable microdermabrasion brushes:

BTW I found a couple of microdermabrasion brushes at TJMaxx.  And they were all around $10!!!  A good deal is usually waiting to be found!  Just double check before you buy if they come with replacement brush heads; and where you can get them.  (Check Amazon)

Exoliating for your feet: I do believe in well maintained hands & feet. Check out my post on Feet and Toes!
I want to mention I used to have an aunt who paid no attention to her feet.  I remember them, her heels were white, thick, & callousy.  Not to mention her toenails were yellow.  Not a sexy look, my friend.
Just keep in mind the compliment my mother said to me after I had my exfoliation treatment. Also, your creams & lotions will work better after you’ve had all the dead skin washed off.  Exfoliating will help you look cleaner, healthier, & looking younger.  I’m not saying to follow all of the treatments I’ve mentioned above; like anything else I mention on my blog, pick & choose what is best for you & your budget.
